Higher Education in Europe

Europe is a vast multicultural and multilingual continent which is reflected through its strong and historic culture. Higher education and academia has always remained a strong component of EU’s reforms and policies. Some European universities celebrate a history of nearly 1000 years. Currently, the continent encompasses around 5000 higher education institutions and renowned universities.

Higher education systems in individual European countries have developed throughout time in response to social change and scientific progress. However, just as different European countries have become more integrated economically and politically, in the past two decades there has been a rapid movement towards a joint venture, promoting education and academia across the continent.

Key Elements to Complete the Higher Education Area in Europe

The creation of such a European Higher Education Area was subject to the fulfillment of 3 key components:

  • The creation of an evaluation system that would allow the comparison of study programs and courses.
  • The creation of comparable higher education structures
  • The application of the Lisbon Convention, which ensures that studies are mutually recognized within the signatory countries
